IKSPFH - Concept and implementation of an object-oriented framework for image processing

This paper describes the concept of an Iconic Kernel System which provides a general software tooibox allowing image processing algorithms to be implemented independently of computer hardware and operating systems. Following a strict object-oriented design philosophy, it contains a basic set of data structures and operations from which the applicationspecific software environments can be built. Special attention has been paid to the incorporation of non-object-oriented software into object-oriented environments and to the integration of communication objects for the integration of distributed system components and user interface systems. The concept has been implemented in a DECVAX/VMS environment as a working prototype using several programming languages.
